Jim Ricks curates Mark O'Kelly in the Bleed Gallery

A Delay in Addressing the Glass
by Mark O'Kelly
The gallery name refers to the 'bleed' in printing and design. That is, the material to be trimmed off so the image, text, background fill extend to the edge of the paper. It is the necessary unseen and disposed of in the making of art that is pondered as the conceptual basis for this project. This can further be accentuated by, and what may be people's first impression of, the word bleed's primary definition in terms of function: to let out, drain, escape, release.

Mark O'Kelly was asked to respond to this. A Delay in Addressing the Glass was developed dialogically through reflecting O'Kelly's recent exhibition at Project Art Centre, Empireland. O'Kelly's work is packed densely with art historical references. As such, A Delay in Addressing the Glass unpacks and makes explicit some of these, while utilising the Bleed space as a 'shop display' influenced from 1920 Paris, reworking Duchamp, and highlighting the literal bleed; the industrial off-cut from O'Kelly's Project Art Centre scarf, a repeating roll of the artist's work in that show.

Mark O'Kelly (b 1968) lives and works in Dublin and Limerick, Ireland. He studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, 1985-1990 and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, 1990-1992. He is a Lecturer in Fine Art at Limerick College of Art and Design.

Bleed gallery, like many projects by Jim Ricks, pushes back at accepted and preconceived forms and ideas, in this case of visual art exhibitions. The space is visible but not open. The visibility is contingent on the hours of those using New Art Studio above, tying the project not just in its address to the making of work, but also to the real habits and behaviours of those involved in studio production.

Bleed gallery is a 6 month project curated by Jim Ricks. It is located at 2/3 Mary's Abbey, Dublin 7 and is made possible by New Art Studio. A Delay in Addressing the Glass will be on view from 21 June 2016, with a Tuesday, June 28th coffee reception at 2pm. The show runs until the first week of August.

April 16

Our Project space becomes the BLEED GALLERY for the next six months and will be curated by guest curator Jim Ricks

Susan MacWilliam was asked to respond to this. Medium Wavelength is developed from her explorations and experiments with the objects, furniture and images from her studio, from off cuts, and re-manipulated video sequences. 19th April - 31st May.

Maggie Madden's solo exhibition 'Hardly Audible' at Mother's Tankstation Gallery, Dublin in April 13th - May 21st.

Mother's Tankstation, 41-43 Watling Street, Ushers Island, Dublin 8
Mother's Tank Station presents 'Hardly Audible' by Maggie Madden.
The experience of parceled space and wire-segmented air seems oddly relevant to Maggie Madden's site-specific installation, hardly audible, created for the cross-steels, and the central eleven-metre skylight of mother's tankstation. Looking up, looking down, looking through, are all critical to the content; meanings and readings embedded in her work. Madden has been collecting particularly coloured plastic bags for a number of years, diversely sourced from travels; from near and far, from the exotics of Morocco, Portugal, to the prosaics of her local butcher and Dublin City Council bins and softly joining them into translucent topographies. Having first found dense bundles of telephone wiring in a skip a decade or so ago, Madden has been experimenting with the material ever since, stripping back optical fibre cables and removing its protective armour to reveal tiny multicoloured strands of fibres, from which she produces what she calls "drawings in space".

March 16

Our Project space becomes the BLEED GALLERY for the next six months and will be curated by guest curator Jim Ricks. The Spiral Show is the first a series of exhibits he will be presenting in his BLEED GALLERY Project.

The first exhibition in the Bleed gallery series was a group show. No less than 10 artists, 1 curator, 1 writer and 2 organisations were involved. Using the seemingly straightforward premise of exhibiting art works that are spiral in form as a starting point, the combination and representation of works quickly bend in another direction and begin to overlap.
Many are reproduced from high-res images found online. They are images of something else, not original art objects: a simulacra created of images in motion (the poor image) in the age of digital and mechanical reproduction. Many of the works also overtly reference other artists and their works. Sometimes once over, others with multiple passes. In both case, layers of art history are coiling in from their present form.
The repeating motif of the spiral allows a range of works that typify Jim Ricks's methodology to come to light simultaneously. This misleadingly simple configuration, allowing us to skip from spiral to spiral, takes broad strides between interests, influences, and exhibition strategies. Not least of which is pushing the more extreme end of appropriation through unsolicited exhibition, curation, copies/stand-ins, fakes/knock-offs, and riffs. What is revealed in the showing is a keen interest in art history and a willingness to play with and update it. Like the spirals themselves tracing the concept back towards it's origin.

Eithne Carr Anniversary (10.05.1943 - 11.12.2014)

Eithne joined our studios shortly after we first opened in 1983 and became an integral part of NAS. She worked here continously for more than 30 years.
You always knew when Eithne was in the building. From when you turned the key in the front door there would be evidence she had arrived in ahead of you
with various items, bags of brushes, canvases, plants and flowers at different points up the stairs until you arrived at her studio on the first floor.
The windowsill outside her studio was covered with her plants which she frequently forgot to water. Arriving at the door of her studio you needed to watch
out for wet oil paint usually bright yellow which could be on any surface. The studio itself was usually a mess with it being difficult to know where to put your
feet. Yet in the middle of all this chaos beautiful work was created. Eithne loved colour, light and nature. She didn't always get enough colour or light here in
Ireland so she frequently headed off on trips to sunnier places, Greece, Spain, New Mexico and Australia, returning with fabulous landscape paintings.
Back in the studio in Dublin she completed many fine still life works as well as portraits.

Eithne was passionate about her work but she was also always interested the work of other artists in the studio. She had a child-like curiosity and interest in
everything that was going on around her and thoroughly enjoyed the banter with other studio members. Her studio meant a great deal to her. Even in her latter
years and failing health she was determined to be there.

One year on our building is quieter and a good deal tidier but there is an absense. Our friend and collegue is gone. Gone but not forgotten and we miss her very much.

Eithne Carr RHA
10.05.1943 -11.12.2014

We are saddened to learn of the death of our friend and colleague Eithne Carr. Eithne joined our studios shortly after we first opened in 1983 and painted there continuously until her recent illness. She was an accomplished painter who punctuated her studio work in Dublin with painting trips to Crete and New Mexico and invariably returned with the makings of an excellent show in her suitcase! She loved nature, colour and light and was a keen hill walker. She loved life and was always interested in everything and everyone. The studios were always lively when Eithne was around. She will be greatly missed.

Maggie Madden.
A Great Expanse (2014)

Maggie Madden is exhibitiong with Susan Connolly in a two person exhibition PERSONA at ArtBox.
' In this exhibition, artists Susan Connolly and Maggie Madden examine the relationship of the aesthetic subject and the idea of 'exhibition'. The title for this exhibition is taken from Director Ingmar Bergman's seminal 1960's film, 'Persona'. Both art and film have at certain junctures, exposed the limits of their media to further examine the role of art and its presentation. The film ostensibly explores the relationship of two women placed in close proximity, however what remains central to the work is the non-reciprocated conversation between the two protagonists. And although a reciprocity between (object and viewer) is often looked for in the presentation of art, the gallery, ultimately retains a performative disposition'. Exhibition dates: December 12th-January 31st.

Judy Carroll Deeley's solo exhibition 'Making Strange' will be exhibited at The Ulster Hall, Belfast from December 2nd and will continues until December 31st. The official opening reception will take place on Thursday December 4th when the exhibition will be launched by Dr Meabh O'Regan.

Kathy Herbert and Dorothy Smith are creating a 7 metre long collaborative drawing in
the Gallery in Draoicht from the 8 – 12 July. The Gallery will be open during this period and
members of the pubic are welcome. The drawing will be based on alternative explorations of the
planned space that is Blanchardstown Town Centre.
Walking will be the primary research tool. The artists anticipate that they will find themselves off
the predictable paths and in situations that are different from those intended by the design of the
Centre. Source material in the form of drawings, written notes and photographs will be
collected on these walks. This material will inform the collaborative drawing.
Blanchardstown Town Centre is designed primarily for ease of parking and shopping.
This project aims to expand this experience – seeing other than carparks and shops, doing other
than shopping and driving, adding to the intended experience of the place.
How easy is it to move from place to place, what will be found, what will the experience feel
like, what else is there to be discovered that is generally overlooked or hidden?
Walking/Drawing is the current manifestation of Open to the Public. Open to the Public is a
ongoing collaborative project which brings drawing out of the studio setting and creates
situations where artist and members of the public can engage directly with each other and the
act of drawing. For further information check the Draíocht website.

lacuna:
noun (pl. lacunae, lacunas)
[1] an unfilled space; a gap, a missing portion: particularly in a manuscript, inscription, text, painting
[2] music an intentional, extended silence in a piece of music
[3] linguistics a lexical gap in a language
[4] anatomy a cavity or depression, especially in bone
Lacuna [ ] is a new curatorial project at Taylor Galleries co-curated by David Quinn and Sabina Mac Mahon. Situated in the first floor exhibition spaces of the gallery at 16 Kildare Street, it is planned as an occasional and on-going series of exhibitions and publications that will run alongside the gallery's main programme and embrace experimental and enquiring practices in image- and object-making. When an empty space is encountered it can evoke a desire to fill it with something; to make it complete. In addressing this compulsion Lacuna [ ] both asks and answers the question, 'With what?'. Six artists have been invited to take part in the first iteration of the series, Lacuna [01]. Rather than asking them to respond to a theme, Lacuna [01] embraces the diversity of their current practices, processes and concerns, offering them a space in which to show new and recent work that encompasses sculpture, drawing, installation, painting and photography.

The show will not be a typical 'in the round' affair, with floor works being tethered to the wall in various ways.

Given that IMMA is closed to the public on Monday's, many staff are not scheduled to work on that day, and subsequently spend time in the studio focusing on their individual artistic practices – thereby attributing the logical and witty title, Made on Monday, to the show".
